Stan's LS5 Project
Complete Frame off Restoration

This is an Original LS5 car with M-22. The car has 80,000 original miles, came with three build sheets and POP. It is undergoing a complete restoration this winter (2000). The car was purchased from Stan's good friend, Hal Ey who's 1970 LS6 is featured on this site. Hal had already spent a lot of time media-blasting and primering part. It was decided to do a complete engine compartment restoration, this winter.

The paint is pretty good for a 12-year-old lacquer paint job. Hopefully, it will only require a good color sanding. The interior only needs minor work as well, Stan has plans to weld in a console hump to accomodate the conversion from front-bench seat to buckets and console. The current plan is to inspect, clean, replate or replace every nut and bolt from the firewall forward to factory specifications, as much as possible. Stan is going to take some liberties powder coating certain parts where he thinks durability or maintainence will be an issue.

The motor is currently at the machine shop and will recieve new forged pistons, new valves, hardened seats, rings, bearings, rod bolts, cam, valve springs, etc.

In October, the frame rails were painted.

In November 2000, the coil springs, A-arms, and dust shields were powder-coated for durability. What a chore pressing in the new ball joints and control arm bushings without damaging the powdercoat!! The caliper mounting bracket and bolt were correctly replated in gold-cadmium while the new rotors have been sprayed with a high-temp clear engine enamel to prevent rusting (no - not the rotor surface!!)
